Research Ecologist, ZP-0408-3/4 (DE/CR)

As an Research Ecologist, you will perform the following duties:
Design, plan and execute field and laboratory research to identify responses of estuarine and coastal waters, habitats and species to environmental and anthropogenic stressors in order to improve resilience of communities and ecosystems. Serve as liaison and subject-matter expert to policy makers, advisory groups and other scientists on issues related to estuarine waters. Manage comprehensive, interdisciplinary scientific research teams to advance scientific understanding and inform public policy. Conduct field work using standard methods, practices and sensors and develop innovative methods. Lead statistical and advanced mathematical analyses. Lead and/or support national-level working groups on efforts to improve methodologies and understanding of ecosystems and ecological processes at large spatial scales, e.g. watershed and above. Lead and write technical, multi-disciplinary, integrated research reports and publications. Disseminate research results to scientific and general audiences. Develop research project proposals, and advise and coordinate with other researchers/scientists. Note:
The duties are at the full ZP-4 performance level and the ZP-3 are developmental leading to such performance. EDUCATION:
Degree:
Biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.-AND-SPECIALIZED
Experience:
Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.To qualify at the ZP-3 or GS-11 level:

Experience:
In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-2 or GS-09 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:
Performing ecological research of estuarine and coastal habitats or species, and participating in multi-disciplinary projects involving restoration or conservation activities; Applying ecosystems approach to research on how environmental variability, ecological processes and human interactions influence outcomes for marine organisms, animal and plant habitats and shoreline conditions; and Collecting and analyzing data on ecological and environmental stressors. -OR-SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION:
Master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field appropriate to the position. -OR-COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND
Experience:
A combination of related graduate level education and specialized experience as described above. NOTE:
Only graduate education in excess of one year is qualifying for combination of education and experience. To qualify at the ZP-4 or GS-13 level:
SPECIALIZED
Experience:
In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicant must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-3 or GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:
Designing and performing multidisciplinary field research projects to identify estuarine and coastal habitat issues and problems; Applying an ecosystems approach to research regarding ecological patterns and processes at large spatial scales (e.g. landscape/watershed and above) and assessing the ecological effects of human-induced and natural stressors; Performing multivariate statistical and/or advanced mathematical analyses of large data sets to identify patterns and relationships; and Collaborating with coastal and natural resource planners, regulators and/or marine industry stakeholders to identify research issues/problems to develop research initiatives.
